Sampa BJJ at 2017 IBJJF Pan American Jiu-Jitsu championship

Congrats to all those Sampa students who participated  and a sponsor athletes that competed in the IBJJF pan-american tournament, Congrats John Haynes for his second place!

The students fought very hard and bravely, despite the results, they still represented our school and team very well.

In this 2017 IBJJF Pan American Jiu-Jitsu tournament, four of our students and one sponsor athlete have participated from Sampa.

The competition level was very high, and unfortunately just one student  “John” was able to get the second place in the blue belt master. We were very happy with his hardcore, high level training that helped him to achieve his tournament goal.

We had other students that  also deserved to place, but unfortunately,  they could not make it this time because of the high level of the competition which is the beauty of the sport – Some weight classes are so competitive that at any given day many athletes could have the chance to be the winner.

Like our own student David who was the Pan American  champion last year and this time unfortunately could not place.

We here at Sampa Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the city of Walnut are not a school solely focused in competitions but we highly recommend all the student to participate in competitions to acquire more knowledge to know themselves and how they can react under pressure.

There is a saying in martial arts: “to know yourself is to dominate yourself and to dominate yourself is to triumph”.

The anxiety and stress one goes through during a competition time no teacher can teach, neither you can read about it and acquire that experience.

One must experience it to be able learn from it.

But here at Sampa Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the city of Walnut we understand that competition is just one part of the art. As Kano the founder of judo says: It is a tool for physical, mental and moral development.

So in today’s words, one seeks martial arts for getting in shape but, later will get the benefit of calmness, focus, self discipline and be able to be someone who carry a great hard work ethics! And competition is a tool and not the only to to achieve this.
