Sampa Jiu Jitsu – spotlight series

Mike Pajota.

Here at Sampa, we are so happy and thankful that so many people have chosen to train with us. We would like to take some time and put the spotlight on some of the members of the Sampa community in our Sampa Spotlight Series. This week, our Sampa Spotlight is on Mike Pajota, a 43 year old Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Mike is also a student of Sampa’s Muay Thai classes as well as a teacher for some of Sampa’s Youth Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes. You can find Mike at the Walnut location all the time! Mike started with Sampa in 3 ½ years ago when he was told by his doctor that he was overweight and needed to change his lifestyle.

Because Mike works at Sampa so much, he’s able to see the many different types of students that come into Sampa. His favorite thing is to see how enthusiastic and passionate even the Sampa kids are. He loves teaching the kids a new technique and watching them gain self confidence as they master it.

Mike loves Brazilian Jiu Jitsu because of how technical the sport is. Mike feels that being able to learn the dangerous capacities of your bare hands is pretty amazing, and learning how to defend against all of those attacks is even cooler!

He remembers that during his first time he was able to attend the sparring class, Professor Renato choked him with a Lapel Choke. That day, he learned the Lapel Choke and was hooked on Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. Mike had been able to see himself grow and improve as a student. Recently, Coach Alex told him that he was “not so easy” to roll with anymore, and it make Mike realize how much he’s improved.

Mike wants people to know that Sampa BJJ and martial arts is for everyone! Sampa has classes for everyone, from toddlers, to seniors. “Big, small, overweight, in shape, hobbyists, and competitors”- all are welcome at Sampa!
