🥋 Building the Next Generation of Black Belts
A few years ago, during an international SAMBO examination, I (Renato) found myself helping a group of Brazilian athletes. The examiner spoke only English and Russian, so I translated and guided them through the test.
When the first candidate — a Judo black belt — stepped up, I immediately knew what to expect. Judo has a clear, structured system. Every black belt must demonstrate a defined standard of knowledge to earn that rank.
But when the next candidate came, he was from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black belt . That’s when I realized something important: in Jiu-Jitsu, there’s often no universal system. One practitioner may have incredible armbar skills, while another may know almost nothing about takedowns or self-defense. This freedom makes BJJ beautiful — but it also means the standards can vary greatly.
That experience inspired a mission. Before our camps, we now gather our purple and brown belts — the future black belts — to go through a structured system of essential knowledge. The goal isn’t to restrict creativity, but to ensure confidence, clarity, and consistency in teaching.
Because when we establish a solid foundation, our future instructors can pass on Jiu-Jitsu safely, effectively, and passionately — keeping the art alive for generations to come.
